For those looking for the ultimate track-day toys, it doesn’t get much better than this trio. The Mercedes-AMG GT R, BMW M4 GTS, and Porsche 911 GT3 RS each represent what their respective manufacturer is capable of when they are at their best. That doesn’t mean that they are all equal.
The M4 GTS has been around the longest of the bunch, it doesn’t appear to be quite up to par with the others. The turbocharged straight-6 can be a bit overbearing, the chassis is a handful at the limit, and the whole car just doesn’t come off as being worth twice as much as a regular M4 with the Competition Package.
The AMG GT R is a more serious effort. The 585 horsepower twin-turbo V8 engine has explosive performance, the chassis dances at the limit, and yet, that last bit of emotional satisfaction is still missing. As good as the BMW and Mercedes are, neither one can match the ultimate performance and character of the 911 GT3 RS.
That naturally aspirated flat-6 engine revs to nearly 9000rpm and sounds like a proper race car at full chat. The chassis balance is a work of art, and the everyday livability is hardly compromised. At the end of the day, the GT3 RS is as good as it gets. At least until the next GT3 comes along. Watch the full Top Gear comparison below.
